Anastasia Zhukova won the international competition for the Women’s STEM Award 2019 (prize money 3,000 EUR) for her master’s thesis compiled in our group.

German Telekom and the students’ magazine audimax jointly organize the competition, which in 2019 attracted 140 submissions of high-profile graduate theses addressing one of five topical areas: Cloud, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Networks of the Future.

The thesis titled

“Automated Identification of Framing by Word Choice and Labeling to Reveal Media Bias in News Articles”

is available for download

A jury of international experts selected Anastasia’s thesis, which addresses the pressing problem of enabling computers to identify slanted news coverage, as the most outstanding submission in the area of Artificial Intelligence and the best thesis in the competition overall. Anastasia completed a significant part of her research in close collaboration with experts on Natural Language Processing during a six-month-long research stay at the National Institute of Informatics (NII), Tokyo.

The award ceremony took place at the headquarters of German Telekom in Bonn on July 4, 2019.
